Support for International Students

Local Support

Depending on where they study, international students can often obtain support in various ways from their university or local government. So that students can make the most of their time in Japan, some universities provide free Japanese lessons for international students.

In addition, universities and prefectural or municipal governments usually offer a range of social
events and activities for international students and their families, and there are other forms of
support. As an example, the Fukuoka International Association, which is sponsored by the city
government, runs Rainbow Plaza, which, among other functions, offers assistance and provides
information to foreigners. In addition to having a small library and producing a number of its own publications, Rainbow Plaza coordinates free counseling, legal and other services for non-
Japanese residents.
